Dress Trends 2012 from New York Fashion Week

WSJ declares that there's nothing new to see at NYFW. Okay, so was it that boring?

"Everyone's still doing color blocking. It's just the same old thing," - Maren Hartman, top U.S. trend analyst

Really now? Maybe I wasn't born far back into fashion's history to notice that this season seems to be an awkward repeat. It would be terrible to say that New York Fashion Week 2012 wasn't a bit fashion forward.

What is the Theme Song of the Burberry Body TV Commercial?

If you've heard that sensual and dramatic song from the Burberry Body TV Commercial featuring Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and her gorgeous gams. Well, I bet you're wondering what the title is so you can download it pronto! The song is kinda a cross between what Augustina and Bryan Adams would crap out anyway. The song title is Rosé by The Feeling

Still, how action bonehead Jason Statham managed to snag her is still beyond me :( Let's just say this  Victoria's Secret model may be the sexiest, but not the brightest tool in the shed.

The Harvey Nichols Sale: Crotch Wetness All the Rage

Now its quite in vogue to pee in your pants particularly with news of price reductions at Harvey Nichols! The sale ads crosses the line between disgust and amusement.

The Harvey Nichols Sale flyers were mailed to their customers to promote their upcoming sale, resulted in offending a horde of loyal Harvey Nichols' clientele.  Apparently, no one likes a defiant woman with a damp crotch wearing orange trousers. So much for the slogan: 'The Harvey Nichols Sale... Try To Contain Your Excitement.'

Bring out the adult diapers, we're heading off to Harvey Nichols!

Aquascutum Sold for $24 million to Chinese Fashion Firm YGM Trading

A Hong Kong company said it has agreed to buy the business and assets of troubled British luxury clothing maker Aquascutum for £15 million ($24.2 million). YGM Trading told the Hong Kong stock exchange late Thursday that the acquisition was based on the "substantial value" of the more than 160-year-old icon of British high-end fashion, which entered administration last month. They have sold the brand and assets including UK stores, concessions and the head office, preserving 100 jobs.

Aquascutum is known for its trademark plaid or Club Check colours worn by politicians and royals throughout the turn of the century. Aquascutum was established in 1851, the year of the Great Exhibition, when tailor and entrepreneur John Emary opened a high quality menswear shop at 46 Regent Street. In 1853, after succeeding to produce the first waterproof wool, he had his discovery patented and renamed the company ‘Aquascutum’, Latin for ‘watershield’.

"We are delighted to announce the sale of Aquascutum, safeguarding the jobs of over 100 employees and the presence of the iconic Aquascutum brand in the United Kingdom," said joint administrator Geoff Rowley.

Chinese fashion firm YGM Trading has owned Aquascutum's brand licence for Asian markets since 2009. Aquascutum, which is known for trench coats worn by Winston Churchill and Greta Garbo, said in April that it had entered administration due to "challenging conditions" in Britain. YGM shares were 1.13 percent higher at HK$19.7 on Friday morning.

Household Shampoo Magnate: Vidal Sassoon Dies at 84 years old

Vidal Sassoon, hair stylist and fashion world icon who created a natural look in the 1960s and built a hairstyling empire on his name, has died of apparent natural causes at his home in Los Angeles. He was 84.

This British stylist's scissors was the known killer of the 1950s beehive and bouffant craze. Vidal Sassoon was the hairstylist who brought women's hair down by pioneering easy wash and wear looks. As much as he was a genius in the salon, Sassoon was a business genius who knew the reach of his merch. He began marketing his name, branding his styles and cutting techniques through a global line of salons, beauty schools and hair care products.

Grace Coddington, the creative director of American Vogue has this to say about the hait icon - “He changed the way everyone looked at hair. Before Sassoon, it was all back-combing and lacquer; the whole thing was to make it high and artificial. Suddenly you could put your fingers through your hair!”

Truly Sassoon made the world of hair liberating for women today.

Paco Rabanne Fires Creative Director Arora

Fashion house Paco Rabanne, which launched a women's ready-to-wear line last year, has dismissed its artistic director, Manish Arora of India, by a "mutual agreement," it said Friday.

"We are most grateful to Manish for the work accomplished and the energy that he displayed all along this project," it said in a statement.

Arora, who has his own line of apparel in an array of psychedelic colours and snappy prints, presented a critically acclaimed collection for Paco Rabanne in March.  His first creations for the Paris-based Spanish fashion house, unveiled in September last year in its first show since 2006, featured exaggerated shoulders and hips reminiscent of Thierry Mugler's silhouettes of the 1980s. Arora, a Bombay native who lives in New Delhi, said in the statement: "Revisiting the Paco Rabanne fashion was a very enriching experience and an exceptional artistic and human adventure."

LVMH Hits a Snag with eBay

French luxury goods company LVMH suffered a setback in its attempts to stamp out counterfeit trading on eBay, as a French court partially overturned a previous ruling against the online auctioneer. France's highest appeals court found that a lower court did not have jurisdiction over the San Jose, California-based company's U.S. website but upheld the earlier ruling as applied to its French and British sites.

A host of perfume and cosmetic brands under the LVMH umbrella, including Christian Dior, Givenchy and Guerlain, had sued eBay claiming that the site allowed trade in counterfeit goods.LVMH also claimed that the sale of real perfumes through non approved distribution channels like eBay hurt its business.

In 2008 a lower court in France ordered eBay to pay LVMH 38.5 million euros. A subsequent appeals court reduced the sum to 5.7 million euros but affirmed that eBay had been in the wrong. The decision on Thursday will likely lead to a reduction in the existing fine, the court said, once the lower court reviews the case again.
The court also overturned an injunction banning the trade in LVMH perfumes on the eBay site, noting that such trade did not violate the laws governing private commerce.

Alber Elbaz Marks his Big 10 at Lanvin

Alber Elbaz finally celebrates his ten years at one of the world's oldest French maisons, Lanvin. Elbaz marks his 10 wonderful creative years at the helm. Known as an 'emotional' designer who has his heart set on making women of the world happy through his distinct set of couture, Elbaz is critically-lauded for bringing  femininity back into the forefront of Lanvin collections. Beyond the bow tie, he has reinvented costume jewelry into a modern chic must-have and made pleated dresses that are to die for.

Ironically, his big breakthrough from being fashion's jester into 'serious' designer was when Kate Moss flaunting her post-baby body was caught wearing one of his Lanvin pieces at a Manolo Blahnik exhibition. Suddenly everyone wanted a piece of Elbaz' Lanvin and Lanvin was suddenly once again the house in vogue.

As Lanvin toasts Elbaz' decade-long rule with a marvelous celebration of sorts- an anniversary fashion show, a golden catalog featuring 3,000 photographs that showcases the golden age of Alber Elbaz.

Who is Alber Elbaz?
Born in Casablanca, Morocco, Elbaz moved to Holon, Israel with his family at the age of ten. After his stint in the military, Elbaz hung his combat fatigues for a shot in the fashion industry, he enrolled at the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design in Ramat Gan, Israel. On October 2001, history was made as Elbaz became part of Lanvin family after being fired from YSL. Elbaz also had stints at Italian fashion houses Krizia, Geoffrey Beene, and Guy Laroche. Alber Elbaz is known as one of the most influential modern fashion fixtures.

Jewelry by Ligia Dias

Ligia Dias started out in ready-to-wear and worked for a time at Lanvin before detouring into jewelry and winning the Andam prize for Young French Design in 2009. No sooner did Rei Kawakubo get a load of her povera approach—i.e. mounting humble washers and grapplers on grosgrain to render them haute, and mixing bourgeois pearls with run-of-the-mill chains or hand-painted wood—than she ordered a pile of pieces exclusively for the Comme des Garçons boutique in Tokyo.

Speaking of Japan, Dias is headed to Kyoto with her trusty tools for a six-month artist’s residency. Not surprisingly, her next collection will marry her industrial signature with an artisanal Japanese aesthetic.

Kolfinna Kristofersdottir

Iceland, with its tongue-twisting names (remember Eyjafjallajökull?), is leaving us speechless once again. Kolfinna Kristofersdottir has been on every casting director's radar since her Marc Jacobs exclusive at the fall '12 shows, her first season. She then opened and closed Christopher Kane in London before killing it in Milan, walking for Prada, Versace, Fendi, Missoni, and Bottega Veneta.

Kolfinna's pixieish features have also earned her a few high-profile international Vogue castings, including April's Prom Night editorial in Vogue Italia, shot by Steven Meisel, and a shoot in Vogue Germany's May issue. A cross between Bjork and Karlie Kloss, she's clearly made to be seen.

Balenciaga Spring Ads 2012

A possible throwback to Patti Smith's starving years as a young musician holed up in flea bag motels, Balenciaga triumphantly channels an era of junkie and rocker chic fashion, complete with the apartment clutter that comes with missed periods and heroin overdoses.

The Balenciaga spring campaign was shot by photographer Steven Meisel with models Laura Kampman, Rosie Tapner, Juliane Gruner and Kirstin Liljegren.
